Most visitors want somewhere central and in easy walking distance of the Dublin tourist sights. The central Temple Bar area was once a down-and-out part of Dublin where the highlight was the bus depot.
Now it is a thriving commercial centre, a bustling cultural quarter and a hunting ground for stag-parties. There is a vast choice of central Dublin hotels in the area but expect to pay a premium. Dublin is not a cheap city, but you should find hotels, hostels and B&Bs at budget rates if you shop around.
The Grafton Street area and surrounding districts of St. Stephen's Green and Merrion Square have elegant architecture and prices reflect the affluence of this part of Dublin.
North of the Liffey remains rather downmarket but new hotels and the Millennium Bridge link to Temple Bar have made it much more attractive. The Smithfield area has also had a major facelift and is worth investigating.
Merrion Hotel is well located between St Stephen's Gree and Merrion Square. It's in four restored Georgian townhouses. Rack rates are hefty but look out for special offers.
Blooms Hotel is in Temple Bar and has reasonable prices, a busy bar and a popular nightclub on the premises.
The Fleet Street has 3 star accommodation in Temple Bar, affordable and comfortable.
The Conrad Dublin Hotel is right in the city centre near St Stephen's Green and the Grafton Street shops and often has good deals
Temple Bar Hotel - in the centre of the action, often with good value mid-week rooms-only offers for those on a budget.
Trinity College campus also offers great value budget self-catering rooms over the summer.
Jurys Inns has hotels at Christchurch, the Custom House and Parnell Street with very competitive prices.
The Clarence is near to the Guinness Storehouse. Owned by Irish rock super-group U2, the hotel was refurbished in 1996 and has the renowned Tea Room restaurant and stylish Octagon bar.
Harcourt Hotel has some excellent offers, often with a free bottle of bubbly thrown in.
